REHEARSAL
âAll right, letâs take it from the top, shall we?â suggested Martin.
Martin Pringle was the director of Rapture and it was the final weekâs rehearsal before the playâs first performance. For Allie, the previous three weeks had sped by in a blur. She barely remembered her audition now, the way sheâd recited the words sheâd memorised by heart, the way the three people auditioning her had just sat there open-mouthed after sheâd finished speaking, as though theyâd experienced some kind of religious vision themselves. Sheâd known right then and there that they were going to offer her the part. She only wished that she could be sure that their reactions were genuine, that they hadnât in some way been bewitched by Nick, even though he was nowhere to be seen by then. Surely he couldnât influence people from a distance? Could he? But then she thought of the way heâd influenced her competition for the role and she knew only too well that he was quite capable of doing exactly that.
But at any rate, they had offered her the part. And of course, sheâd accepted it, sheâd have been crazy not to, sheâd have equal billing with the other three actors starring alongside her which was a fantastic opportunity for a novice. After that sheâd been plunged headlong into a frantic schedule. Sheâd been introduced to the other, older members of the cast, who had all behaved like they were doing her an immense favour, allowing her to act alongside them. Sheâd met the producer, a hippie-ish looking woman called Fran, who favoured violently-coloured dresses and large, hooped earrings; sheâd met stage managers and lighting technicians and musicians and all manner of people who would be involved in the production of the play; and of course, sheâd met Martin, a thin, serious-looking guy in his late forties, with cropped black hair and horn-rimmed glasses. After that, sheâd embarked on a daily series of rehearsals as she and the other three cast members worked through the script of Rapture, trying to make it come to life, while its author, Justin, sat in the front row of the stalls, watching expressionlessly as his brainchild began to take form right in front of his eyes.
Dean was playing Theresaâs father, Gregor. He was a big bluff bearded man with intense blue eyes and a booming voice that seemed to fill any room. Maggie played Theresaâs mother, Flora. She was a tiny, wizened little woman with a shock of grey hair and a terribly posh English accent, which miraculously transformed into a broad Scottish one every time she spoke a line from the script. And then there was Jason, a young, lean actor who had been cast as Michael, the new priest in the area, a man who was keen to claim Theresaâs vision for the glory of the church. Jason was in his twenties, extremely good-looking and very aware of the fact. Whenever his dark brown eyes looked deep into Allieâs, she felt shaken
